Dogal Venezia - Marco Polo Collection

Marco Polo (Venice, 15 September 1254 - Venice, 8 January 1324) was an Italian traveler, writer, ambassador and merchant, citizen of the Republic of Venice.

The report of his travels in the Far East is collected in the literary work Il Milione, a veritable geographical encyclopedia that brings together essential knowledge about Asia in Europe at the end of the thirteenth century.

Member of the Venetian patriciate, he traveled with his father Niccolò and his paternal uncle Matteo through Asia along the Silk Road to China, then Cathay, from 1271 to 1295. Advisor and ambassador to the court of the Grand Khan Kubilai, he returned to Venice in 1295 with a good fortune that he invested in the family business. Prisoner of the Genoese from 1296 to 1299, he dictated the memories of his travels to Rustichello da Pisa, perhaps his cellmate, who wrote them in the Franco-Venetian language with the title "Divisiment dou monde". Now rich and famous, he married the patrician Donata Badoer, with whom he had three daughters: Moretta, Bellela, Fantina. He died in 1324 and was buried in the church of San Lorenzo in Venice.

Although he was not the first European to reach China, he was the first to compile a detailed account of the journey, Il Milione, which was the inspiration for generations of European travelers, such as Christopher Columbus, and provided insights and materials for Western cartography, first and foremost. to the world map of Fra Mauro.
