History



A sparkling jewel protected by the hills of the Marca Trevigiana, Villa Sandi is a Palladian style masterpiece dating back to 1622, and it is also the main office of the company.


The Villa rises from a fertile countryside in which fields and farms, nowadays as well as in the past, pay homage to the local history. A vibrant stage in which nature and architecture live in total harmony together; place of delight and headquarters, the complex of Villa Sandi is an enchanting estate where man and environment are in perfect symbiosis.



The entrance is an elegant alley sided by statues of the popular Venetian sculptor Orazio Marinali, whose works decorate also the gable and the backyard. A massive pronaos, sustained by four Ionian columns, adorn the main part of the building, on each side of which two elegant Barchesse and a small chapel stand.The Villa, cultural heritage of the Trevisan land, is situated between the D.O.C.G. area of the Prosecco of Valdobbiadene and the D.O.C. area of the Montello and Piave wines.



These precious rooms, outlined by the delicate combination of pastel colours, stuccoes and bass-relieves, and dominated by splendid Murano glass chandeliers hosted in the past important figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, the sculptor Antonio Canova, the painter Schiavoni, famous writers such as Caccianiga and Corso, thus preserving great memories of a glorious and aristocratic past. The noble families from Venice spent the summer period in the villas on their vast estates in the countryside enjoying a healthier and more pleasant climate horse riding, hunting or relaxing in the scenery of gardens and vineyards.In the hilly area, they promoted vine growing and wine making giving rise to production of fresh white wines. From the 15th to the 18th centuries the noble and wealthy families of Venice had villas built in the countryside to be used as vacation mansions.



The elegant buildings recalled the magnificence of the palaces in Venice and were located at the centre of huge land properties in the area known as “Garden of Venice”. They were symbols of their owners’ power and wealth and hosted lavish banquets and dances. Villa Sandi dates back to the 17th century and is a perfect example of the link between the splendour of Venice of the past and the fertile countryside.



The Family



Devoted to wine culture for many generations, the Moretti Polegato family, owner of the Villa, have fostered this ancient tradition by making Villa Sandi the headquarters of the winery, and by promoting grape growing in the area on a modern basis. Giancarlo Moretti Polegato, who is very fond and knowledgeable of the wine world, is very proud to carry on the family tradition.


The Estates



"La Rivetta" Estate



The Villa Sandi estate Vigna La Rivetta lies in the heart of the 106,8 hectares of the Cartizze area, between the hamlets of Santo Stefano and San Pietro di Barbozza, in the municipality of Valdobbiadene.
The estate La Rivetta covers one and a half hectares in the middle of this micro-area blessed with a gentle microclimate and an ancient fertile soil; the estate fully benefits from this special and perfect combination of geo-climatic features. Cartizze is a very special cru, the result of exceptional and fortunate conditions that enable a wine with unique characteristics to be produced. Villa Sandi Cartizze Vigna La Rivetta is proposed in a brut version, suitable for the whole meal.


Valdobbiadene Estate



In Valdobbiadene another estate stands, whose strategic location, exposed to the beneficial effects of sunrays and wind, leads to the cultivation of the best selection of grapes and to the production of the best crus of Prosecco DOCG. Besides this enchanting scenario of sunny hills, Villa Sandi monitors, with the help of experienced eonologists and agronomists, numerous vineyards of selected grape growers to ensure top quality DOCG wines.


This area is well renowned for the production of Prosecco, and Villa Sandi devotes to the production its utmost care and attention. The result of such effort is an elegant wine with typical flowery and fruity notes that makes it unique in all its versions: sparkling, and semi-sparkling.


Crocetta of Montello Estate



On this estate the grapes destined to the production of the prestigious reserves Marinali and Opere Trevigiane are cultivated. These are important vineyards where the traditional cultivation techniques are combined with the expertise offered by the Experimental Institute for the Viniculture in Conegliano.


Nervesa della Battaglia Estate



Vineyards have characterized for centuries the landscape of the Trevisan hills and the Villa Sandi estate in Nervesa della Battaglia is located indeed in the heart of the Montello and Colli Asolani area. Here the characteristics of the soil allow the production of the Prosecco Spumante Asolo DOCG.


Spilimbergo Estate



Villa Sandi 50 hectares estate in Spilimbergo is located in the large and flat area of Friuli Grave, between Udine and Pordenone and it is mainly composed of stones and gravel. The chalky stones have two positive effects for the vines: during the day they reflect heat and light necessary to the maturation of the grapes while during the night they return the heat accumulated in the sunniest hours thereby maintaining constant climatic conditions extending the harvest season. Sugars are more concentrated in the Grape giving to the wine more complex and aromatic notes. Furthermore the mountains are a barrier to the cold north winds and the proximity of the Adriatic coast contributes to the creation of a microclimate suitable for the cultivation of the vine. It is an area suited to white grapes, indeed in the estate are growing especially Glera, Pinot Grigio and Ribolla gialla.


Opere Trevigiane

Serenissima DOC



The Serenissima Republic of Venice ruled until the end of the eighteenth century the Venetian territories and much of north-eastern Italy.During this period, the production of fresh white wines in the Veneto hills found its most flourishing development: the Venetian aristocrats and rich merchants of Venice had built in these areas Palladian villas and estates, giving rise to what can be described as an aristocratic winemaking. The vineyards of the Serenissima boasted a quality not common to other wines, not only thanks to the preparation of the environmental area but also to continuous innovation and the introduction of new viticulture techniques by the Venetian nobles.


The area of the “Serenissima” D.O.C. extends into the foothills placed as an arch between the Alps at north and the Po plain in the south. The soils, depending on the hilly areas, have a volcanic or sedimentary origin; the soil coming from the sloughing of these rocks is on average superf icial, with the widespread presence of skeleton that allows an excellent drainage of rainwater. The vineyards are located in our estate of Crocetta del Montello.


Freshness in Note Mature



In late August, after careful harvesting, the wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are aged until the following spring. After assembling the two types of wine, it is bottled. The bottles are placed in stacks for at least 24 months. A complex procedure that requires patient waiting and accurate ritual. In the centuries-old underground tunnels, in a charming environment where silence stops time, this wine matures with personality and character, harmony and sweet aroma. Fresh, dry and balanced.


Amalia Moretti



The secret of this Spumante Classico Riserva lays in the long ageing in the eighteenth-century underground cellars, at depths from 5 to 10 meters. a Cuvée of Pinot Nero and Chardonnay grapes coming from the best Cru.


The Amalia Moretti Reserve is produced thanks to the knowledge and care of our oenologists and the precious contribution of Jean-Pierre Valade, winemaker in Champagne. This important Reserve dedicated to the founder, Amalia Moretti, arises from the desire to express all the potential of the land in which we have worked for generations. It is a place of secular culture and home of illustrious names, such as Canova, whose works can be visited in the nearby gypsoteca of Possagno.


Pinot Nero



A black grape vine of French origin. It is said to have been cultivated in Burgundy already 2,000 years ago, well before the arrival of the Romans. There are two types: the fine, used to produce red wines, and the productive from which white and sparkling wines as well as Champagne are obtained. It is a variety that can easly change to give rise to other species, including Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio.


The name Pinot is owed to the typical cone shape of the small, compact and serrated cluster; the grape itself has a thin dark blue skin and a low tannin content.


Chardonnay



A white grape vine originally from the French namesake district in Burgundy. It was brought to Italy at the end of the Seventies; it is believed to have come from a hybrid createde in Carolingian times (8-10th century). Used pure or blendedwith other grapes to obtain still and sparkling winesa, including Champagne, it is particularly suited to vinification and ageing in wood. The aroma is always fresh and intense. Golden grape with high sugar content.

The wine is left to age in bottles placed in stacks sur lattes (on their sides), where the secondary fermentation starts. The yeast deposits form and create the typical aromas of the classic sparkling wine.


Remuage



The bottles are placed on racks (french pupitres) and are delicately turned by skillful hands every day so that the sediment settles on the bottom of the cork.


Dègorgement



The neck of the bottle is frozen and the wine containing the deposit is naturally ejected due to the internal pressure. In this way the rest of the wine remains limpid.

Before corking, a quantity of liqueur d’expédition is added to make up for the small loss of wine from the dégorgement, the recipe for this filling solution is one of the winery’s skills.
