Rocca Sveva

Wines of Verona High Tradition

The Borgo, or historic hamlet, that today enfolds Rocca Sveva is an unusual space and one with characteristics unmatched elsewhere. One of Soave’s most ancient settlements, it still preserves important traces of its past, including venerable inscriptions, the medieval church of San Giorgio, and the Castello di Soave, commanding a view from every direction.

It was in Borgo Rocca Sveva (the ancient Borgo Covergnino), in fact, that the noble Giavarina family had its residence, documented as early as the 15th century in the municipal archives. When that family died out, in the 17005, the new owner used the foundations of the old Villa Giavarina to build a new complex and connecting wine cellars. Cantina di Soave restored these buildings in 2010, bringing back their ancient splendour, and today they serve as a formal event centre for the Winery.

Striving for excellence begins with the vineyards. Every one of the vineyards, amounting to a total of 150 hectares, whose grapes will become Rocca Sveva wines, is located in the hillslope area to the east of Verona. This is a prestigious growing area that yields the classic DOC (Denominazione d’Origine) wines: Soave, Valpolicella, and Garda.

Borgo Rocca Sveva, lying at the foot of the Castello di Soave, is an active wine-producing estate. With the finest of vineyards and equipment, its team of Viticulturalists and winemakers work towards a single objective, to fashion wines of absolute quality that will be the faithful expression of their Verona growing area. This means that in tasting the Rocca Sveva wines, one can fully appreciate the personality, clean contours, finesse, and fine balance that each displays.

Our viticultural experts pay meticulous attention to the time and methods of harvesting, the quality selection of the grapes and their subsequent processing, in order to achieve, beginning right in the Vineyard, uncompromising levels of quality and typicity. The grapes that will become Rocca Sveva wines are picked exclusively by hand, which ensures that only perfectly-ripe grapes are brought to the cellar.

The striking underground cellars extends under the hill for some 400 metres. Here in large oak casks the great reds classic to Verona slowly mature, including Ripasso della Valpolicella and Amarone della Valpolicella. These wines have won the highest wine competition awards and are prized by connoisseurs worldwide.

Borgo Rocca Sveva - A Jewel To Experience Personally

In the shadow of the majestic medieval Castello di Soave, right up against the castle’s ancient walls, lies Borgo Rocca Sveva, a hamlet built in the Middle Ages that Cantina di Soave has transformed into a prestigious centre of wine culture. Borgo Rocca Sveva, with its picturesque cellars, elegant Wine Shop, flourishing botanical garden, and experimental vineyard, represents, in fact, a unique tribute to that culture, with an extraordinary amalgam of history, tradition, and quality.

Today, it is the home of the Rocca Sveva wines and classic-method sparkling wines, an extremely limited-production selection of absolute-quality products: pure beauty in the wineglass. Beauty is what the visitor will find, too, in strolling through the cellars amidst enormous oak ovals, endless rows of wine barrels and wooden riddling racks, where the still and sparkling wines rest through long years. Here, one is truly touring an underground, miniature city.

Borgo Rocca Sveva is not simply a place to visit, however, it is an adventure that should be personally experienced, offering many special events, tastings, conferences, and a whole host of activities that animate daily life here, to the delight of its more than 50,000 annual visitors.
