Ruffino

Since 1877 - Award Winning Wines from the Heart of Tuscany

History

1877, in the village of Pontassieve, just outside Florence, two gentlemen founded the Ruffino winery. Their names are Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino, their dream to create the "ideal wine".

1890, the Duke of Aosta nominates Ruffino as official supplier of his noble tables thanks to the extraordinary quality of his Chianti Stravecchio.

1894, the Chianti Ruffino receives the gold medal in Bordeaux. An extraordinary case of Italian wine awarded in the French territory.

1927, the Duke and Chianti Stravecchio become an inseparable duo: Riserva Ducale is born.

1945, the story of Ruffino intersects with that of Italy. During the Second World War the cellars of Pontassieve are exchanged for the nearby station and destroyed by bombing.

1947, Ruffino produces the first vintage of Riserva Ducale Oro, prestigious further selection of its most ambitious wine. A wine produced only in the best years, refined for a long time and to drink after many years. A revolutionary concept for Tuscany at the time.

At the end of the '40s Ruffino acquired the properties of Poggio Casciano and Montemasso, thus undertaking the ambitious project of owning estates in the most prestigious Tuscan areas.

The '50s and' 60s are a difficult period in Italy, with the first reconstruction and the breakup of the sharecropping system then.

In these years Ruffino is a symbol of the Dolce Vita in Italy and abroad, where his wines reach over 100 countries and cheer the tables of Charles De Gaulle, King Gustav of Sweden and Queen Elizabeth.

1975, Chianti Ruffino changes clothes. The times and the tastes impose to abandon the historical fiasco but Ruffino does it introducing an innovative bottle.

An exclusive property that still holds: the Fiorentina bottle, whose shape pays tribute to the flask and pleasantly also recalls the dome of the Florence Cathedral.

1984, Chianti becomes a DOCG and, almost like a sign of destiny, it is a bottle of Chianti Ruffino to bring the first band, the number AAA00000001.

The 90s are a moment of splendor for Tuscan wines and also for Ruffino, which is a good symbol. The grandiose Colorino of Santedame gives life to the Romitorio and Modus is born, destined in the coming years to represent wonderfully the Supertuscan category.

Today Ruffino is a modern reality, owned by the American multinational Constellation Brands, whose wines can be tasted in over 90 countries.

For many Chianti means ChiantiRuffino, Riserva Ducale has recently made 80 vintages and is one of the best known Italian reds in the world while Modus has been included in the world ranking of the 100 best wines.
