In the early 19th century, the pagoda was started by Mr. and Mrs. Bui Cong Dat. In 1849, Venerable Thich Hue Dang from Giac Lam Pagoda (Gia Dinh) came to preside over the construction of a large temple and named it Vinh Truong Pagoda with the wish that the pagoda would be "Eternally facing the mountains and rivers, everlasting with heaven and earth". People in the surrounding area still call it Vinh Trang Pagoda. In 1907, Venerable Chanh Hau had the pagoda restored, blending both Asian and European architecture. This is a famous pagoda in the South, and a famous pilgrimage and tourist destination.
