The Merchant of Venice Spa

Inside the exclusive Venetian resort San Clemente Palace Kempinski, located on the private island of the same name just a few minutes by boat from Piazza San Marco, The Merchant of Venice is pleased to present its first SPA. The Merchant of Venice SPA is the first wellness area to offer treatments and massages with oils created by The Merchant of Venice following ancient oriental recipes imported over the centuries to the lagoon city by its merchants.

Essential oils such as sandalwood, jojoba and bergamot, combined with room fragrances inspired by aromatherapy invite you to a true "sensory journey between Venice and the East", giving a deep feeling of relaxation and regeneration of body and mind. The elegant SPA covers two floors of a building adjacent to the hotel reopened in 2016 under Kempinski, a historic luxury hospitality brand. Its 380 square meters include a wet area - Finnish sauna, Turkish bath and emotional showers - a relaxation lounge, a wellness area and four treatment rooms.

You can indulge in an experience of pure luxury in the SPA Suite, an intimate and exclusive refuge for two, entirely dedicated to regenerating body and mind. Here, a giant map of the Mude allows you to be transported on the ancient Venetian routes on a journey of soul and senses. The Viaggio a Cipro treatment for two uses the relaxing and toning properties of the precious Rosa Moceniga, an ancient species introduced to Venice from central China and now "rediscovered" by The Merchant of Venice.

The couple's massage based on the essential oil of this rose is preceded by a romantic bath enriched with its petals.

Each treatment is carefully designed to lead the body and mind to the discovery of the Venetian perfume tradition.

From the flagship aromatherapy massage The Merchant of Venice, based on exclusive essential oils and aimed at reawakening the body's vitality, to the Mocenigo Rose Massage, which fascinates with its rare and precious notes, there are many body treatments that allow you to rediscover physical and mental well-being.

Sandalwood essential oil, known for centuries for its anti-stress action, is the protagonist of the rebalancing treatment La Rotta di Marco Polo; bergamot, also known as the gold of Italy, given its relaxing and soothing properties, is used for the draining massage, while the treatment I Secreti di Isabella Cortese, which helps reduce stress and harmonize the body thanks to the properties of lavender essential oil, is inspired by an ancient recipe book of cosmetic secrets.

Also not to be missed is the gold facial treatment, a symbol of beauty since ancient times when it was applied to the skin to make it shine with its own light. Recent studies have demonstrated the exceptional anti-ageing properties of gold that gives brightness, fills wrinkles and reduces dark circles. The innovative and luxurious global treatment Splendor Antiage by The Merchant of Venice is based on 11 24 Kt gold leaves to be applied to the skin together with two pre- and post-treatment serums based on vitamin E.

The gold leaves are handmade by the goldbeater Mario Berta who works in the heart of Venice. The facial and body treatments by Natura Bissé complete the rich menu of the SPA.

The Merchant of Venice SPA is integrated into the San Clemente Palace Kempinski which offers a unique sports and wellness experience for Venice. The centuries-old park on the island of San Clemente hosts one of the few heated outdoor swimming pools in Venice, a golf driving range and a tennis court, as well as a 1.5 km jogging path with a unique view of the lagoon.

Keep Active You can choose between a heated outdoor pool, a golf course, a tennis court, a volleyball court, a jogging track or a fully equipped fitness center, all available for your enjoyment, for an active mind, body and soul.

The lush gardens are the backdrop to the various yoga practices taught by expert trainers and, during the summer, to the Summerhouse Experience that combines the benefits of The Merchant of Venice SPA treatments with the harmonious atmosphere of nature, giving moments of total abandonment of the mind and regenerating pleasure for the body.

The Merchant of Venice SPA through its highly trained staff will be able to welcome and satisfy the desire for well-being of the resort's guests and also external guests who will be able to enjoy the island's wellness services thanks to the San Clemente Palace Kempinski VIP Membership Card.

Church of San Clemente - History Dating Back to 1131

The history of the Church of San Clemente is steeped in significance and has witnessed notable events over the centuries. The island itself was settled in 1131, thanks to the patronage of the Venetian merchant Pietro Gattilesso. He financed the construction of the Church of San Clemente, along with a hospice for pilgrims and soldiers heading to the Holy Land during the Crusades. The church is named after Pope Clement I, a martyr and patron saint of sailors. Its facades bear carvings of soldiers, an unusual feature for a religious structure, which are testaments to the significant events that have taken place in the history of Venice.

One particular event depicted on the doors is the Naval Battle of Lepanto, which took place on October 7, 1571. The battle saw the Republic of Venice lead a coalition of Christian states against the Ottoman Empire, resulting in a decisive victory for the Holy League. This monumental battle marked a turning point in European history and led to the decline of Ottoman naval power in the Mediterranean. In 1643, the Venetians, in gratitude for surviving a devastating plague in 1630, funded the construction of a new chapel within the Church of San Clemente. This chapel, inspired by the Holy House of Loreto, is known as a "church within a church" and remains a prominent feature of the architectural design.

Over the course of its existence, the Church of San Clemente faced several challenges. The fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797 and the subsequent suppression of religious orders by Napoleon in 1810 led to the departure of the Camaldolese monks, turning the island into a military garrison. The island subsequently served as a hospital and various other facilities until it experienced an economic crisis. Ownership passed to a bank before being acquired by a hotel company, which successfully operated the island for three years. Finally, the renowned Kempinski Group took over the management, transforming San Clemente Palace into a prestigious hotel and resort.

Over the years, San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice has received numerous awards, including the title of Best Wedding Hotel in 2017 by the World Tourism Awards, Best Hotel in Venice in 2018 by Condé Nast Readers' Choice, and Best Wedding Resort in 2019 by the World Travel Awards. It has also been recommended by Forbes Travel Guide and recognized as Best Eco-Friendly Hotel in Venice in 2022 by TraveMyth. It also holds the distinction of being named Best Historic Hotel in Europe for 2022 by Best Historic Hotels of the World.

The Church of San Clemente stands as a testament to Venice's history, architectural grandeur and cultural significance, making it a treasured destination for visitors from around the world.
