Our History

Danish Design, Audio, Environment - Dare To Be Different

At Libratone we think differently. We created one of the world's first wireless speakers, giving you the freedom to enjoy rich, authentic sound anyhow, anywhere. We were first to really think about the look of our speakers, combining minimalist Scandinavian designs, and soft fabrics with warm, interesting colours. And we were first to free speakers from the corner of the living room and sit them center stage.

We began as a start-up in Denmark back in 2009. Now you can find our speakers all over the world. Building upon more than 50 years of Danish acoustic know-how, our products combine beautiful design with cutting-edge technology. Put simply, it's sound as you've never seen or heard it before.

Once Upon a Time - 2009

Back in 2009, three Danish entrepreneurs shared a dream: to push the limits of audio equipment and create an entirely new type of speaker. They knew the future lay in freeing the listener from the constraints of cables, so they set to work, creating a speaker that could deliver rich, authentic sound without wires.

Many months, notepads and late nights later, the ZIPP was born: a wireless speaker designed for 21st century living. The first of its kind, this groundbreaking speaker has won some of the most important awards in the industry. And we continue to go from strength to strength.

The Sound of Nightingale

Sitting neatly on top of every Libratone speaker you’ll find a nightingale. Why a nightingale? It all starts with a story by Hans Christian Anderson about a Chinese Emperor who falls in love with the nightingale’s beautiful song. The nightingale loses favor when the Emperor is given a mechanical bird and so he sets the Nightingale free.

Years later the Emperor becomes sick and, on his deathbed, the nightingale returns to sing to him. “Death” is so moved by its beautiful song that it departs and the Emperor recovers.

The nightingale is our tribute to true sound and its power to overcome anything. To you it’s a mark of beautiful design and outstanding audio.

At Libratone we set sound free, hence our name, which comes from combining the words 'liberation' and 'tone'. But we don't just liberate sound through the performance of our products. We believe in giving you the freedom to create your own listening experiences. The freedom to listen to your favourite music, anyhow, anyway, anywhere.
