The Venetian Perfuming Art
To the virtuous women, the qval delights in perfumery art.
About Us
The Merchant of Venice represents the Art of Perfumery of Venice. It draws attention to the everlasting role of the city as an essential force in the perfumery tradition throughout the world, and it is intended to highlight the tradition that made Italy, and particularly Venice, central to the history of perfumery. The Merchant of Venice is a luxury line that offers a large assortment of exclusive Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette, along with body care and household products and accessories.
The line is inspired by the “Mude,” the maritime trade routes that covered a very large area from Asia to Africa, and on to Europe as far as the Northern Seas. The “Mude” started from Venice and reached many different harbours, which in turn were the destination of other commercial routes. These ports were the exchange centres for raw materials and finished products.
This system enabled the Republic of Venice to acquire the knowledge and raw materials that otherwise it could not directly attain from within its own mainland. Through master craftsmen such as the muschieri (perfumers), venditori de polvere di Cipro (Cyprus powder haberdashers) and the saoneri (soap makers), new techniques of production were invented that made the Venetian perfumes and cosmetics highly sought after products in all the Royal Courts of Europe.
The Vidal Family, involved in the arts of perfumery for more than a century, recognised the need for a cultural luxury brand that would express the uniqueness of Venice: The Merchant of Venice.
Perfume Museum
The Merchant of Venice is the official line of the Perfume Museum in Venice. The Museum is the result of the collaboration between Mavive, the historic Venetian perfume company, and the Fondazione Musei Civici of Venice. The Perfume Museum is housed in the prestigious Palazzo Mocenigo in San Stae, already housing the Museum of the History of Textile and Costumes.
The perfume section includes six rooms. It begins with a presentation of the history of cosmetics, particularly focused on Venice, and further-on presents original instruments, historical items, texts, highly valuable documentation, and an extraordinary collection of perfume phials and bottles - true jewels of an ancient craftsmanship. The museum employs a multi-sensorial approach that, along with multimedia tools, accompanies the visitor through an extraordinary and captivating olfactory experience.
Among the different objects on display are several phials from the extraordinary Storp collection. Among the most important in the world, this collection includes over 2500 objects, some of them dated as far back as 2000 BC. The Museum also displays the first recipe book of cosmetics, Secreti Nobilissimi dell'Arte Profumatoria by Giovanventura Rosetti (1672).
The Perfume Museum is a dynamic museum that is also a study-centre on perfume. This centre includes courses on the composition of fragrances, a multimedia laboratory - enabling visitors to deepen their knowledge about the world and history of perfumes and cosmetics - and a White Room, entirely dedicated to temporary exhibitions.

The Merchant of Venice Spa
Sensorial Journey between Venice and the Orient
The Merchant of Venice, the brand of artistic perfumery closely related to Venice and its history, opens its first SPA inside the exclusive Venetian resort, San Clemente Palace Kempinski. The resort, a few minutes by boat from St. Mark's Square, is located on a private island that bears the same name.
The Merchant of Venice SPA is the first wellness area to offer treatments and massages with oils created by The Merchant of Venice. Their formulae are based on ancient Oriental recipes imported over the centuries to Venice by its merchants. Essential oils such as sandalwood, jojoba and bergamot, combined with room fragrances inspired by aromatherapy, invite one to enjoy a true "sensory journey between Venice and the Orient," by generating a deep feeling of relaxation and regeneration of both body and mind.
The elegant SPA covers two floors of a building adjacent to the hotel, reopened in 2016 by Kempinski, a historic brand of luxury accommodation. In its 380 square meters, it includes a moisturising area – Finnish Sauna, Turkish Bath, and Emotive Showers - a relaxing lounge, a wellness area and four treatment rooms.
In the SPA Suite guests are able to indulge themselves in a pure luxury experience. It is a haven for two people, intimate and exclusive, entirely dedicated to regenerating both mind and body. A large map of the Venetian Mude enables guests to imagine their souls and senses are journeying along ancient Venetian sea-routes. The treatment, Journey to Cyprus for two, uses the relaxing and toning properties of the noble Mocenigo Rose, an ancient species imported from central China to Venice and "rediscovered" anew by The Merchant of Venice. The massage for two with the essential oil of this rose is anticipated by a romantic bath enriched by its petals.
Each treatment is thoroughly studied to guide body and mind to the discovery of the Venetian perfumery tradition. The Aromatherapy Massage, based on exclusive essential oils that revive the vitality of the body, and the Rosa Mocenigo Massage, fascinating with its rare and noble notes, are only two of the many body treatments that regenerate both physical and mental well-being.
The sandal essential oil, known for centuries for its anti-stress action, is the main ingredient in the re-equilibration treatment of La Rotta di Marco Polo. The bergamot, also called the Gold of Italy given its calming and relaxing properties, is used for water-reduction massage. The treatment, The Secrets of Isabella Cortese, is inspired by an ancient recipe book of cosmetic secrets; due to the properties of lavender essential oil, this treatment helps to reduce stress and harmonise the body.
Another unique treatment is the Face Gold-Treatment. Since antiquity, gold has been the symbol of beauty: it was applied to the skin to make it glow. Recent studies have demonstrated the exceptional anti-ageing properties of gold, which generate brightness, smooths-out wrinkles, and attenuates dark circles.
The innovative and luxurious full-body treatment, Splendor Antiage by The Merchant of Venice, is based on eleven 24K gold leaves, applied to the skin along with two pre- and post-treatment serums based on vitamin E. The golden leaves are handmade by the artist, Mario Berta, who works in the heart of Venice. The Natura Bissé face and body treatments complete the richness on offer at the SPA.
The Merchant of Venice SPA is integrated into the San Clemente Palace Kempinski, which offers sport and wellness experiences that are unique in Venice. The century-old park on the island of San Clemente houses one of the few heated outdoor swimming pools in Venice, a golf course, and a tennis court, plus a 1.5 Km. jogging trail with a unique view of the lagoon. The lush gardens are the ideal frame for the various yoga exercises taught by experienced trainers. In Summer, the Summerhouse Experience combines the benefits of The Merchant of Venice SPA treatments with the harmonious atmosphere of nature, generating moments of total abandonment for the mind and regenerative pleasures for the body.
The Merchant of Venice SPA, through its expert and experienced staff, is able to accommodate and satisfy the wishes of the resort's guests as well as those of visiting guests, (who can also enjoy the services on the island through their San Clemente Palace Kempinski VIP Membership Card).
Stores Concept
The Flagship Boutique, The Merchant of Venice, is housed in a prestigious, ancient chemist shop located in San Fantin, in the heart of Venice and immediately adjacent to the world famous opera theatre, La Fenice. Since the mid-17th century, the ground floor of a building in Campo San Fantin, in the very heart of Venice, housed an apothecary under the insignia of San Paolo. Much later, in 1846, it became the famous pharmacy designed by the architect, Giambattista Meduna, who created the refined appearance that has now been completely restored to its original splendour.
With respect to his later design of the pharmacy, the furnishings and decorations employ a flamboyant neo-Gothic style: the hickory panelling together with the wood and terracotta decorations are reminiscent of certain architectural elements evident in the ancient Venetian palaces. Among the different elements, the four large statues by the sculptor, Pietro Zandomeneghi, are particularly impressive. They are inserted into an elegant niche that is topped by an aedicule, and the entire setting is surrounded by twelve smaller, allegorical figures. The four larger statues represent respectively: Botany, Medicine, Surgery, and Physics.
The Spezieria all’Ercole d’Oro at Santa Fosca is a prestigious location housing The Merchant of Venice line from Christmas 2013. Once belonging to Giovanni Girolamo Zanichelli, some years ago it was restored and brought back to its original 18th century splendour. The visitor/client can therefore appreciate what an important apothecary looked like at the time. The rooms were enriched with noble woods and sculptures and represented more than the daily activity of a pharmacy. In fact, it was the ideal place to purchase medicines as well as enjoying conversations with friends and fellow citizens about the news of the day.
The Merchant of Venice opens a new, exceptional store dedicated to the ancient Venetian art of perfumery. This Concept Store of The Merchant of Venice narrates the unique relationship between the arts of perfumery and glassblowing, both of which are ideally embodied in the concept of the brand. The store will house unique items signed by master glass blowers, along with the other prestigious collections of The Merchant of Venice. The interior design of the store is reminiscent of the taste and elements that characterise the other boutiques. The employment of the same colours and decorations used in the treasured, ancient textile artwork in Palazzo Mocenigo underlines the Venetian character of the brand, one that venerates and expresses culture and traditions of the city.
The fourth, one-brand boutique in Italy of The Merchant of Venice was opened in Verona on 1st July 2016. Verona is the second most important and visited city in the Veneto region. The boutique is located in Corso Sant’Anastasia 10, behind Piazza dei Signori and near the celebrated square, Piazza delle Erbe. The boutique’s elegant and refined interior was especially designed to create a multisensory ambience that is both involving and evocative. Adjacent to an elegant arched window, the visitor enters through a beautiful doorway and is immediately introduced to the world of The Merchant of Venice, which is instantly recognisable through the use of typical colours and decorations already present in the other boutiques of the brand. The table at the centre of the room displays the main lines of the brand, while on the walls there are black lacquered shelves with gilded finishes, which display the most exclusive collections.
The one-brand store of The Merchant of Venice is located in Via Brera 4, Milan, and it represents a small“cameo jewel” among the other boutiques in the area. The new boutique has been created by the Maestro, Pier Luigi Pizzi, one of the most pre-eminent stage designers in the world. From the store’s windows to the internal space of the boutique, customers are surrounded by a design that carries a strong theatrical suggestion. The neoclassic and essential furniture is made unique by the characteristic Venetian Red, a colour that has always been a feature of this artistic perfumery brand. At the centre of the store, there is an Aedicule featuring Corinthian columns framing the giant picture of a bottle from the perfume line.
The Merchant of Venice has been flourishing at a high pace since its foundation. There are many new openings expected in luxury department stores and international airports, besides the stunning direct stores. Moreover, the franchising format is already ongoing. The original project has been further developed into two new retail formats.
